Before he leaves West Point they have given him their message, revealing from time to time to his vision, that field from which lifts the radiant mist called glory.” Brigadier General Morris Schaff USMA, Class of 1862 Seated around a mess table at the Academy one evening, just after the Battle of Chancelorsville, several officers were remembering their friends and classmates who had already given their lives in the Civil War. They had sacrificed their lives upholding the finest traditions of The Point while remaining true to their commitment to “Duty, Honor, Country”. The officers’ after dinner discussion and remembrances, honored the young men with whom they had shared so much camaraderie Credit is given to Lieutenant H. C. Hasbrouck, Class of 1861, for suggesting that a memorial be built as a personal tribute to their fallen “brothers”. The intent was for the monument not to be paid for by the government or taxpayers, but by the classmates and comrades of the fallen. It was originally intended to be placed “in the field, within hearing of the roar of battle and in sight of the dead whose memory is preserved.” The present location was chosen and given the name “Trophy Point”. An “inauguration” for the monument was given on June 15, 1864 with an address delivered by Major General George B. McClellan. Present were several fighting regiments of the regular army, the 3rd, 6th, 7th, and 12th Regiments. Funds were slowly donated by voluntary contributions from officers and men of the regular army over the course of many years. 6% of the donating soldier’s monthly pay was allocated to the fund month after month. “Was ever a shaft so reared before, or with a sentiment more tender and unselfish?” The Battle Monument was dedicated on May 31, 1897. Frederick MacMonnies was the sculptor and Stanford White the architect. The polished column of solid pink granite is 46 feet tall and 5 1/2 feet in diameter at its base. Atop the monument is a bronze female figure of “Fame” blowing a trumpet and holding aloft a memorial wreath. Fifty bronze canons captured from the Confederacy were donated by the US Congress. They were melted down to create the statue of “Fame” and the ornate decorations and names at the base of the monument. 2,240 names are inscribed in bronze upon the base of the monument, all of whom died in service during the Civil War. Encircling the base are 8 pairs of bronze cannon tubes, each aside a large, highly polished granite sphere. The Battle Monument is the only monument in The United States dedicated to the officers and men of the Regular Army who fought for the Union during the Civil War. The inscription, about 1/4 of the way up the vertical shaft reads; “In Memory of the Officers and Men of the Regular Army of the United States who fell in battle during the War of the Rebellion. This Monument is erected By Their Surviving Comrades.” Like the Battle Monument itself, “By Their Surviving Comrades” is dedicated to the officers and men of the Regular Army who gave their lives to preserve the Union.
