“Final Duty” Image Size: 4" x 6". Framed Size: 8" x 10" Regular edition FRAMED S/N Mini-print of 500: $50.00 plus $5.00 shipping Proceeds Donated to the North Carolina South Mountain Monument Fund “Final Duty”, the fine art print by Civil War and historical artist Paul R. Martin III, will benefit the North Carolina South Mountain Monument Fund. The print is Mr. Martin’s artist rendering of the proposed North Carolina Monument at South Mountain, Maryland. "In this print I tried to capture a moment of poignant honor. A fallen and mortally wounded North Carolina soldier struggles to hold his beloved battle flag aloft. He realizes that he is taking his last breaths on earth and a feeling of calm and a sense of tranquillity has over taken him. There is an expression of silent resignation and peaceful acceptance upon his face. He gazes proudly upon the banner he has bravely carried through many a battle. He knows that he has given his "last full measure of devotion". Every last ounce of strength is expended to prevent the colors from falling to the ground. In his waning earthly moments, he performs with dignity, his "FINAL DUTY"! Paul R. Martin III July, 1999 This print was commissioned by The Living History Association of Mecklenburg Inc., who are sponsoring and spearheading the drive to erect a monument to the North Carolina troops killed at Fox’s Gap during the Battle of South Mountain on September 14, 1862. Mr. Martin donated his time and effort to create the original drawing. The framed drawing is displayed by the association at their fund raising presentations and appearances. The print is being sold to raise funds for the monument. The Battle of South Mountain was fought on September 14, 1862, and was a prelude to the Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg). The fighting occurred along Fox’s Gap, Turner’s Gap and Crampton’s Gap. The morning combat at Fox’s Gap saw one of the few instances of actual hand-to-hand fighting of the war. Bayonets and clubbed muskets were used freely and participants remembered the fighting “as hot as any in the entire war”. The fighting at Fox’s Gap claimed the lives of Union General Jesse Reno and Confederate Brig. General Samuel Garland, Jr. There is a monument to General Reno and a commemorative marker to General Garland on the battlefield site. Two days after the battle, Union burial details and/or the local farmer Daniel Wise, dumped the bodies of 58 confederate dead down the well of farmer Wise. This infamous incident achieved legendary proportions after the war. The Confederates were reinterred twelve years later to the Confederate Cemetery in Hagerstown Maryland. 25,000 Union troops and 10,000 Confederate troops fought at South Mountain. Two future presidents also fought there. Both Rutherford B. Hayes and William McKinley served with the 23rd Ohio. Hayes was severely wounded and McKinley survived only to be shot down by an assassin’s bullet on September 14, 1901, 39 years to the day of the Battle of South Mountain. The battle was the first major battle in the free state of Maryland. The North Carolina regiments that fought there were, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 20th, 23rd, and 30th. In honor of the casualties of these North Carolina Regiments, The Living History Association of Mecklenburg, Inc. is spearheading an effort throughout the Country to place a monument at Fox’s Gap. The land has already been donated by the Central Maryland Heritage League, a local organization dedicated to preserving the battlefield. The LHAM has entered into an agreement with sculptor Gary Casteel to sculpt the monument. The Monument will depict a fallen North Carolina soldier holding aloft a Confederate Battle Flag. It is hoped that the monument will be erected and dedicated no later than September 14, 2004. Over $60,000.00 is needed to complete the project.
