There is no place in the world like the battlefield at Gettysburg. There on the first three days of July, 1863 was waged the largest battle ever fought on the North American continent. It was on a corner of that battlefield, on November 19, 1863, that President Abraham Lincoln presented a “few appropriate remarks” during the dedication of the Soldiers National Cemetery. Within a few years other monuments, most placed by veterans of Northern states, began to appear on the battlefield. Eventually Southern state monuments also began to be dedicated. Reunions were held and commissions established, all to preserve the memory of those who fought there. Miraculously, none of the more than two thousand veterans of the North and South who gathered for the event, with an average age of ninety-three, died while at the reunion, although some passed away on their way home.
